Project

The Student Starter Pack is in very high demand because, well, it’s awesome. However, a 🔑 problem we face is that there exist more students and faculty who want the pack than reviewers able to quickly respond to all requests! I’ve been working on two main additions: 1) provide the reviewers with more efficient tools to analyze whether or not a request is fraudulent; and 2) using the output from these tools, build a machine learning model that aims to reduce the amount of manual review necessary by automating responses. These changes decrease the load on our amazing analysts, speed up application response times, and mitigate the amount of fraud that gets through!

What Surprised You Most About GitHub?

Like my fellow Education intern @angelapwen, it was very surprising how much GitHub used GitHub internally, but I’m not sure what I should have expected. Mainly, I was surprised by (but also really enjoyed) the intimacy of messaging in Slack channels and working with my team. Even though GitHub is not a small company, the majority-remote nature and team-within-team hierarchy do a great job at facilitating the feeling of a tight-knit environment.

Something Awesome About Interning Remotely

The ability to join my team’s morning meetings within 10 minutes of waking up is a huge plus. Remote work lets you maximize sleep and not miss a thing! The same goes for bathroom breaks and eating. Just turn off your video (while ensuring you’re still muted…) and take your device anywhere 🙃.

Favorite Slack Channel

I’m biased because education is 👌, so here are my favorite non-education channels: #internocat-gang for hanging out with past and present interns; #the-tribe which has a beautiful channel topic of a place to kibitz, kvetch, and schmooze with your GitHub mishpocheh; and #incident-command for watching a bunch of really smart people try to figure out why GitHub is down as fast as possible.
